Is it the IRS calling or is it a scam?
Just when we read that the head of an international gang of thieves scamming US taxpayers has been arrested, the IRS has announced that it will begin using private debt collection agencies to collect past due taxes. These will be overdue taxes which the IRS does not have the resources to pursue (perhaps because of the low amounts overdue) and taxes which are so overdue that the IRS has stopped trying to collect them.
How private debt collection agencies will ask to be paid.
The private debt collection agencies will only ask for payments to be made online at IRS.gov or by check payable to the U.S. Treasury and sent directly to the IRS, not to the debt collection agency. The private collection agencies will not ask for payment on a prepaid debit, iTunes or gift card.
The four private debt collection agencies are listed below.
Conserve, 200 CrossKeys Office Park, Fairport, New York 14450
Pioneer, 325 Daniel Zenker Drive, Horseheads, New York 14845
Performant, 333 North Canyons Parkway, Livermore, California 94551
CBE Group, 1309 Technology Parkway, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613.
